Akamai Delivers Domino’s Pizza, Dynamically

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), the leading provider of cloud optimization services, today announced it has been selected as the exclusive online content delivery partner by Domino’s Pizza Enterprises Ltd in Australia and New Zealand. The company chose Akamai’s solution to power its successful online ordering service and recently launched iPhone application, as well as the corporate website. The partnership extends Akamai’s growing list of e-commerce customers in the region.

Akamai began delivering content to the Australian Domino’s Pizza websites in September 2009. Since then Akamai has supported significant volumes of online traffic, including during the 2010 FIFA World Cup when traffic to the website increased considerably. During a test period from 6 June to 6 July 2010, Akamai enabled faster webpage loading times and increased sales by supporting 8.3 million page views of Domino’s website, with a peak of 51 views per second.

During the same period, Akamai delivered a total volume of 7.8 terabytes, peaking at 188 megabits per second. Akamai also offloaded 75 per cent of traffic requests and 96.5 per cent of bandwidth for the Domino’s Pizza websites in Australia and New Zealand. By comparison, during May 2010 Akamai was supporting 5.5 million page views, peak periods of 17 views per second and delivering a total volume of 7.3 terabytes.

In November 2009, the pizza chain moved into the mobile commerce market with the launch of its iPhone application, enabling customers to place, customise and track the status of their order. Akamai’s delivery of the application to iPhones facilitated mobile Internet pizza sales of over AUD$1 million in the two months following the launch. Within the third month of its release, the iPhone application had generated total mobile Internet sales exceeding AUD$2 million.

Launched in 2005, the online ordering service has become an increasingly popular sales channel for the pizza chain. In June 2009, online sales in Australia constituted 22.5 per cent of all Domino’s Pizza sales, and by February 2010 the percentage of Australian sales executed online had risen to 28 per cent. The Domino’s Pizza iPhone application reached the number one position on the list of Top Free Applications on Apple’s iTunes within 5 days of its launch, and the number of downloads has surpassed 270,000.
